Heal your DNA???
I don’t know if you have noticed a theme
in my blog, but I keep finding things that have anticancer properties, so I am
going with it. I knew oregano was super
antiseptic (one drop in a gallon of water will purify it!), but it wasn’t until
I researched for the blog that I found the anticandidal and anticancer
connection. (See my article “Kills
Candida and another ‘C’”…) Today, I
bring you watercress, an easily sprouted green to be added to salads,
smoothies, sautéed greens, or soup.
Watercress, found near springs or streams, is a plant that is a close
cousin to arugula, with a similar flavor.
Watercress contains more vitamin C than an orange, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, and more folate than bananas. Vitamin K is by far the
most prominent nutrient in watercress, with 312% of the daily recommended
value. It forms and strengthens the bones and limits neuronal damage in the
brain, which is helpful in treating Alzheimer's disease. Watercress is very low in calories but
contains phytonutrients like isothiocyanates and antioxidants with many
disease-preventive properties. Gluconasturtiin, a glucosinolate compound
providing the peppery flavor, is one of them, contained in the leaves and stems
and providing phenethyl isothiocyanates, shown to inhibit carcinogens.

Manganese is a cofactor for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (the energy enzyme), and calcium for strong bones and teeth come in high doses when you eat watercress. From Organic Facts, “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that cruciferous vegetables may be helpful against cancer. Watercress has shown such an effective anticancer phytonutrient that even eating a single salad shows an increase in molecules into the body’s circulatory system that may possibly prevent and stop the recurrence of breast cancer. Based on a study those who ate at least 80 grams of watercress on a daily basis were shown to have beneficial results.”

First
we will talk about the Big C, the compounds in watercress safeguard healthy
cells, inactivate carcinogenic chemicals and block the growth and spread of
tumors (1, 2, 3) Here is a quote from
the second citation: “Phenethyl
isothiocyanate (a component of watercress) is a particularly effective
inhibitor of lung tumor induction by the tobacco-specific nitrosamine
4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone and, therefore, is currently
being developed as a chemopreventive agent against lung cancer.” This component has also specifically been
shown to prevent colon, lung, prostate and skin cancers. (4,5,6,7) I know this language is thick but here is a
quote from the fourth citation, “Our research provides new insights on
CRC(Colorectal Cancer) therapy using ITC (Isothiocyanates )-enriched Brassicaceae
(in the broccoli family) extracts, specially watercress extract, to target CSCs
(cancer stem cells) and circulating tumor cells by impairing cell proliferation
(multiplying), ALDH1-mediated chemo-resistance, anoikis evasion, self-renewal
and metastatic potential.” (4) Another
study – this one is regarding prostate cancer, “Isothiocyanates (ITCs) derived
from cruciferous vegetables, including phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) and
sulforaphane (SFN), (see my blog article, “Want to RESTORE cognitive
function? Heal dementia?”) exhibit in
vivo activity against prostate cancer in a xenograft and transgenic mouse
model, and thus are appealing for chemoprevention of this disease. Watercress
constituent PEITC and SFN-rich broccoli sprout extract are under clinical
investigations but the molecular mechanisms underlying their cancer
chemopreventive effects are not fully understood.” (6) Who cares if it is fully
understood? Does it work?! I don’t understand how my car works, but I
still use it every day! In another
study, it looks like the isothiocyanates in watercress reverses the damaged DNA
of a cancer cell back to health status.
(WOAH!!!) “Current evidence
supports the view that ITCs are potent compounds in interacting with the
epigenome (DNA) in order to restore the normal epigenetic (DNA) landscape in
malignant cells.” (7) Further studies
have shown watercress is effective against breast cancer, as well. (8, 9)

offer you.
