The Wonders of Baking Soda
Everyone has this amazing mineral in their home,
but I will bet you are not using it to its full potential. From everything from kidney care to skin
care, check out what this incredible powder can do for you. Also known as nahcolite, it is a mineral mined
in California, Colorado, Botswana, Mexico and Kenya. When taken orally, it raises the serum levels
of bicarbonate, which is made by the kidneys and acts as an acid buffer in the
body. Remember cancer loves an acidic
environment in the body, and baking soda alkalizes the body. (1)
According
to the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, “Nutritional parameters
improved significantly with bicarbonate supplementation, which was well
tolerated. This study demonstrates that bicarbonate supplementation slows the
rate of progression of renal failure to ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) and
improves nutritional status among patients with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease)”
(2) This study involved 134 patients and the supplementation was tolerated
well.
Baking
soda can be an alternative to taking antibiotics for a urinary tract infection,
and it is something you can start taking the minute you think you have
one. One study concluded, “Urine alkalization with NaHCO3 (baking soda) orally (4 grams 2x per day) in female patients with LUTS
and acidic urine pH has a significant level of positive effects on symptoms and
symptom scores. Our results show that this new treatment modality-which is
inexpensive, easy to use, and has a low side-effect profile is effective in this
chronic patient group.” (3)
As I mentioned, baking soda
neutralizes acid and balances the pH of the body and is useful for acid reflux
or heartburn. Remember, more is not
better, if you over consume, it could cause an increase in acid production.
Baking soda is antibacterial and
antifungal. Specifically, baking soda
has been proven to kill Streptococcus mutans (the bacteria that causes
CAVITIES) (4) It is also very effective
against fungal groups, yeasts, dermatophytes and molds, responsible for human
skin and nail infections. “We first
evaluated the in vitro antifungal activity of SB (Sodium Bicarbonate) on 70
fungal strains isolated from skin and nail infections: 40 dermatophytes, 18
yeasts and 12 molds. A concentration of 10 g/L SB inhibited the growth of 80%
of all the fungal isolates tested on Sabouraud dextrose agar.” (5)
Baking soda has also been used for
over 80 years as an athletic performance enhancer, boosting energy and speedy
recovery. “The effect of chronic use of bicarbonate
supplementation prior to high-intensity workouts to promote better training
performance and adaptations is worthy of further investigation.” (6)
As an aesthetician, I would be
remiss if I did not mention how wonderful baking soda is for your skin!!! It is a wonderful exfoliator, and because it
is so inexpensive you can use it on your whole body, including your face! You
can simply mix it with water to form a paste or add it to coconut oil to make a
scrub. It will also even out your skin tone,
lightening any dark spots or red scarring from acne. Don’t forget your hands, elbows, knees and
feet! BS is effective against sunburn,
itchy rashes, allergic rashes and poison ivy or oak, bug bites too. Soaking a splinter in BS and warm water will
remove it.
Around the house it is
indispensable! Use it as a kitchen and
bathroom scrub and freshener; for pots and pans, carpet cleaner, silverware
cleaner, oven cleaner, coffee/tea pot cleaner and if you should have a small
grease fire - a fire extinguisher!!!
